If you’ve been surfing for less than two years, here’s a simple path to becoming a confident, well-rounded surfer.
Follow these steps and don’t overcomplicate it.
1. Learn what matters
Start by reading Almond’s Guide to Your First Year of Surfing.
It’s free, and it covers the fundamentals—where to sit, how to paddle, how to catch waves, and how to stay out of your own way.
2. Get the right board
Start with an 8’0” R-Series Joy.
It paddles well, catches waves easily, and works in a wide range of conditions. That means more reps—and more reps is what actually moves you forward.
3. Surf as often as you can
This is the most important step.
Surf your Joy as often as possible and focus on catching a lot of waves. Nothing will accelerate your progress faster than time in the water.
4. Stick with the same board
Ride that same board for at least 1–2 years.
Consistency in your equipment allows you to focus on improving, instead of constantly adjusting to something new.
5. Transition to fiberglass
After 1–2 years, move into a fiberglass board.
The simplest move is to get the same board you’ve been riding—the Joy—but in a more traditional construction.
You already know how it works. Now you can refine your surfing.

6. Choose your direction
Around year 2–4, you’ll have enough experience to decide where you want to go next.
Longer boards: cross-stepping, noseriding, trimming
Shorter boards: steeper waves, tighter turns, more control
There’s no wrong answer—just different paths.
And for the record, your Joy doesn’t go away. It stays in your quiver and continues to serve a purpose.
From here, you can start building out your boards more with some purpose and intention. Think of your quiver like a bag of golf clubs. Each board should serve a specific role.

The takeaway
If you follow this path—ride the right board, surf often, and stay consistent—you’ll build real confidence in the water.
And more importantly, you’ll actually enjoy the process along the way.
